Less than two weeks ago, the Kentucky Humane Society welcomed a very pregnant one-year-old beagle, who had been transferred from another shelter to the specialized Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center.

The organization’s veterinarian, Dr. Bewley named the dog Winnie the Pooch, and because the dog weighed only 23 pounds and had been carrying three very large puppies, offered to foster her until she gave birth.
Last week, Winnie went into labor, and Dr. Bewley stayed by her side to monitor her progress. Hours of contractions went by, and still there were no puppies born; it was time for the medical team to help Winnie give birth. An emergency C-section was performed, and 20 minutes later, three large puppies were born.

Winnie the Pooch’s babies are one week old, and the family is thriving in their foster home. Winnie is regaining her strength and her puppies seem to be getting bigger every day.

Winnie’s motherhood motto is, “it takes a village.” She’s warmed up quickly to her foster family and seems especially grateful to have helping humans around now that her puppies have been born.
When Winnie’s foster family helps out with parenting duties, Winnie curls up for a nap. This mom no longer worries if both she and the puppies are safe.

The organization’s annual Spring Match ends on April 15, which means there is only ONE WEEK left to DOUBLE the impact on animals like Winnie by donating at kyhumane.org/donate.
