In Jacksonville, Florida, military veteran Scott Baker is breathing a sigh of relief after his service dog Mal’i was found safe just after midnight on Thursday after having been missing for five days.

Baker and his service dog are from Iowa and had been in the Florida city to help his son move into an apartment as he begins to serve in the Navy while stationed in Jacksonville.

On Saturday night, Mal’i had been outside for just a few minutes when she ran onto the road outside of the Lux Apartments and was hit by a truck. Terrified, Mal’i fled. Baker was able to follow her, until she ran off a few streets away.
Baker turned to social media and the Jacksonville community to help him find his beloved pup.

Fortunately, someone reading about the accident online, had spotted the dog and helped reunite the American Staff back to her family. Baker received a message with images asking if the dog on the run was Mal’i. He confirmed her identity and went to the area where she had been spotted.
Earlier today, Baker posted the following on his Facebook page:

Breaking News: Mal’i has recovered just after midnight after a tip led us to her location. I am including photos I took of the journey last night. Thank You to the Jacksonville Community for your love, support, and dedication. This was a team effort. This would not have been possible without each and everyone. We will NOT be departing right away. We will be getting her fully evaluated today by the veterinary. We will also give the community an opportunity to meet Mal’i. We cant thank the Jacksonville community enough for bringing Mal’i home
Baker and Mal’i share an incredible bond. Whenever Baker feels overwhelmed or has an “episode”, the dog wakes him up to let him know she’s right there. She knows how Baker feels, and she knows how to make him feel better. What more could anyone want in a service dog?
Once Mal’i gets a clean bill of health, Baker said he would be honored if members of the community would like to meet this incredible pooch.
Welcome home Mal’i.
