An innocent, eight-week-old puppy’s plight shattered hearts at Stray Rescue of St. Louis on Tuesday, March 10, after Animal Control found the defenseless little guy wandering the streets with what appeared to be extensive wounds to his tiny face.

The 11-pound puppy was immediately transferred to Stray Rescue where veterinarians identified a serious bite wound on his face and puncture wounds on his nose and under his ear. The force of the bite had been so strong, his eyeball had popped out of the socket.

He was immediately treated with anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, and pain medications.

His rescuers named him Spinach, and emergency surgery was scheduled to remove his eye. Sadly, it had been damaged beyond repair.

We hate that he had to endure such trauma in his young life, but he’s so happy, gives us full-body wiggles, and wags his tail despite it all… and so, so brave. The fact that he can be in so much pain but still let us know he trusts us and is thankful for us is incredible and humbling.
On Wednesday, Spinach underwent emergency surgery with Dr. Ortiz. He did great in surgery. He quietly slept all day, but by Thursday, he was already acting as if nothing had happened. Spinach is an amazing, wiggly and happy puppy. All he wants to do is to be close to the kind humans who have been caring for him.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis is grateful to everyone for saving this sweet little puppy. He will live a beautiful and normal life. Having one eye won’t slow him down; after just one day it’s not slowing him down. What a brave little guy.
