At Florida’s Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, a 911 distress call was received from a resident in the Stuart West Cobblestone community in Palm City concerning a large bald eagle that had “crash landed” in their yard.

As the eagle attempted to fly again, it sputtered while in its ascent and ended up in a nearby canal known to be inhabited by large alligators.

Without hesitation, MCSO Corporal William Weiss and Animal Services Officer Shannon McGee waded into the water as the eagle struggled and began moving farther out. Together, they were able to safely secure the bird and bring it back to shore and out of immediate danger.

The eagle was taken to a local wildlife hospital, where it is currently reported to be in stable condition and undergoing evaluation. It appears the bird sustained a significant wing injury.

Many thanks to the officers involved in this rescue, and of course, to the resident who called the eagle’s plight into the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office will provide additional information about the eagle’s condition when updated.
