Early Tuesday evening, March 24, 2026, a goldendoodle named Cooper was rescued by an Onondaga County Sheriff’s helicopter from the freezing Seneca River located in Syracuse, New York.

A 911 call had been received at the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office referencing a dog observed frantically doggy paddling in the middle of the river. While conducting a patrol flight at the time, Air 1 responded to the call. Because the dog was struggling to stay afloat and considering the temperature of the water, an immediate rescue was put into action.
The helicopter crew performed a “skid rescue” with a deputy securing himself to the rear of the helicopter and then reaching to grab Cooper.

The dog appeared to be extremely cold as it was continuously shivering. He was transported to the ball fields on Downer St Rd, where Baldwinsville Fire Department Personnel were waiting with blankets.
Cooper is reportedly doing well.
Many thanks to all of the heroes.
The complainant advised 911 that he intended to jump in the river to rescue the dog. 911 advised him not to do so. Great job 911, Air1 flight crew, and fire fighters from the Baldwinsville Fire Department .
