At the World Bird Sanctuary in Valley Park, Missouri, two Bald Eagle chicks were rescued this past weekend after their nest fell into the Big River.

According to the sanctuary, Ray Settle, a Bonne Terre resident, had been out on his property making preparations for an expected storm when he noticed the nest tree had fallen over. And there they were – two eaglets alive and still in the nest, but they were slowly sinking into the river.

Rescuers were called, and Settle granted permission for the wildlife specialists to use his canoe to reach the eaglets. By the time the rescuers could get to the eaglets, they were up to chests in the water as the nest continued to break down around them. One eaglet went into the water, but along with his sibling, both were soon safely secured.

Once they arrived at World Bird Sanctuary, they received complete health exams, and luckily both had survived the tumble of their nest into the river with no injuries. It is not possible to return them to their parents since the nest is no longer there; instead both eaglets will remain in the care of the sanctuary until they are are old enough to be freed.

Many thanks to Ray for contacting the sanctuary and helping to rescue the eaglets. Considering how quickly the nest had been pulling apart in the water, it is likely the eaglets only had another hour before they would have been underwater. At their current age of development, it is not clear if they would be able to swim.

Your support is needed to help these eaglets, as well as the 32 other babies received at the sanctuary this year. Donations will go to the food, medicine, and care they need to return to the wild.

For just $50, you can feed one of these eaglets for an entire week. https://secure.givelively.org/…/world…/baby-season-2025. A fundraiser is currently underway.
