In Oxnard, California, a firefighter from the Ventura County Fire Department braved rising floodwaters on Tuesday to rescue a stranded pup curled up in the weeds during a torrential rain storm in Southern California.

Ventura County Animal Services responded to a report from the Ventura County Public Works about a small dog who had become trapped in rising waters located at Wood Road and Laguna Road in Camarillo.

Animal Control Officers Serratos and Garcia arrived on scene and contacted Ventura County Fire Department for assistance as the dog was approximately ten feet down the wash in moving water.

The fire department deployed a ladder and a rescue swimmer to pull the shivering, but otherwise unharmed dog out of the wash. She was quickly transported to the Camarillo Shelter where she received a vet exam and a warm kennel.

Huge thank you to the VC Public Works crew for reporting the sighting quickly, allowing this girl to be rescued safely. We are grateful for Oxnard City Fire for arriving so quickly on scene, and to the Ventura County Fire Department who ultimately made the rescue.
The approximately three-year-old French bulldog or pug mix did not have a microchip or a tag on her collar, and we are currently searching for her owners. The 19-pound female pug or French bulldog mix was cold but otherwise unharmed.
Many thanks to our firefighter heroes. We couldn’t do it without you brave men and women. Thank you for your service. Please donate to a fire department near you – they may one day save your life or someone you love.
