Along the Cape Hatteras shore, a young green sea turtle was in need of some expert human intervention. The turtle had been discovered stranded and was reported to the local wildlife hotline.

The seashore’s Resource Management team responded and brought the turtle into the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center at the North Carolina Aquarium on April 15th.

The rehab team gave her an exam and began to clean her up. She was found with a heavy load of epibiota including barnacles, algae, and other sea creatures.

When she arrived, the turtle weighed 3.5kg. After cleaning, she weighed 2.8kg. That’s over 1.5 pounds of epibiota removed! She is reported to be making excellent progress. She will remain at the aquarium, and when fully recovered, will be set free.

If you see wildlife in distress on the seashore, contact our hotline at (252) 216-6892.
