Owner and 100+ cats die in animal sanctuary fire on Long Island

An early Monday morning fire in Medford has prompted both a homicide and arson investigation for the cause which left the owner of the sanctuary dead and at least 100 cats. There were reportedly 300 cats in the sanctuary at the time of the fire. Neighbors in the area reported they heard an explosion outside.

Although it has not been determined as to the cause of the fire, and investigators are in the area examining the evidence, it is possible a heater next to a propane tank exploded.

The Dourland Road fire was the home of Happy Cat Sanctuary, Inc. The rescue’s owner Chris Arsenault died in the fire as the structure completely burned to the ground. The non profit organization rescues cats and kittens from abuse, abandonment and critical situations.

Volunteers in the area have posted on social media stating Arsenault had done everything he could to save the lives of as many cats as possible. Friends reported Arsenault going in and out of the house to save the cats; and the last trip inside, he did not come out.

Plans had been currently underway to move the sanctuary upstate; fortunately more than a 100 cats had already been moved.

The vice president of Cat and Kitten Solution posted on social media that hundreds of cats are currently at risk and “carriers are desperately needed.” The Strong Island Animal Rescue League is asking for volunteers to foster cats and kittens.

We still have boots on the ground. This is an ongoing situation. One that will require patience.
A fellow rescuer is gone, along with many of his cats. Responding to each comment just isn’t at the top of our list.

We have a survivor at Jefferson Animal Hospital.
She is on oxygen, received fluids and antibiotics, and has had X-rays done. Her breathing is not good.

There are other survivors at other hospitals.

Please be patient.
