A woman and her son had been walking their Bernedoodle at the corner of 14th Street and Union Square West in New York City on Friday when a man quickly approached from behind the family and stabbed their dog in the rear. The one-year-old dog named Hazel needed emergency surgery.
According to the New York Post, Hazel had been with her owners, Orly Nhaissi and her 13-year-old son Elijah Sherinsky, as the family headed home from a nearby bakery. Suddenly, a man yelled something that sounded like “you’re an idiot.” The man then rushed towards the dog and bent over – stabbing Hazel with a knife.
Hazel had not done anything that would have provoked anyone into stabbing her, but the man laughed and smiled after the attack and then ran away. Elijah chased the man, but his mother quickly called her son back, afraid the crazed man might turn around and attack her son.

Elijah and his mother described the knife as bigger than a pocket knife, but not as large as a typical kitchen knife.
When the family returned to their own building, the doorman and neighbors quickly acted to help Hazel; picking her up and taking her to the Blue Pearl Pet Hospital for emergency surgery. The dog underwent surgery and returned home on Saturday afternoon with blood drain tubes peeking out from her stitched up injuries.
Their veterinarian bills have already exceeded $3,000, but Hazel is a cherished member of the family, and as expensive as her hospital expenses have been, she is one loved dog. She is expected to make a full recovery in about three months.
An investigation is currently underway.
Get well soon Hazel.
