Bravest little survivor rescued from ashes of devastating house fire keeps on fighting

Earlier this week, New York City Second Chance Rescue, asked for the public’s help saving Minnie, a young cat who survived a devastating house fire. She arrived at the shelter in critical condition; her tiny body covered in third degree burns and her breathing labored.

When the staff first saw her, Minnie looked completely defeated. The burns covered her tiny face and legs; she was too weak to move, but thanks to the amazing response from supporters and the emergency medical staff, Minnie was rushed to a 24-hour critical care hospital where her long road to recovery has begun and continues.

She has already undergone wound debridement and is now receiving daily bandage changes, intensive pain management and round-the-clock monitoring by Dr. Walker and the exceptional medical team at @vsgavets. Her treatment will continue for at least six weeks of intensive care.

There has been no doubt that Minnie is a fighter. Although she does remain in serious condition and is not out of the woods, she has stabilized. There are now the healthy signs of her eating, drinking and already turning on the charm with everyone. She is the sweetest cat with the most steadfast desire to get well and back on her gentle paws.

She continues to receive daily bandage changes, and special medicated dressings have been purchased to help promote healing. But with burns this severe, infection is always a danger, and she will remain in critical care until her wounds are fully stabilized.

The devoted volunteers and staff of New York City Second Chance Rescue also wants to address some comments which suggested Minnie should have been euthanized.

Please know that we always follow the guidance of our veterinary partners. When Dr. Walker and the team assessed Minnie, they saw a chance—a difficult road, yes—but a real chance at survival.

Choosing to fight for Minnie’s life was not the easy path. But it was the right one. Death is final, and giving up on her when there was hope would have been the true injustice.

And today, there is hope. In fact, her team now believes it is more likely than not that Minnie will survive. Once empty and full of despair, her eyes now show glimmers of hope and recognition. She knows she is being cared for and her purring is sure to win over hearts.

Many thanks to everyone who continue to support Minnie’s journey to recovery. We will be following Minnie’s story and provide updates.
