Winnie, a friendly Boston terrier, who recently arrived at the Blackfoot Animal Shelter in eastern Idaho, is on the mend after a prickly situation. This curious pup, got a little too close to a porcupine and ended up with dozens of quills lodged in her face and paws.

Thankfully, a Good Samaritan noticed the quills right away and brought Winnie to the shelter for immediate attention. The veterinarian who works with the shelter, treated Winnie.

Porcupine quills can be very dangerous. They’re barbed, so they can burrow deeper as the animal tries to remove them. It’s important to seek professional help immediately.”

Winnie underwent a delicate procedure to remove the quills. While shaken, she’s continuing on her recovery, however she may lose sight in one eye. She is already captivating hearts at the shelter with her sweet personality.

This incident serves as a vital reminder for dog owners to be aware of their surroundings, especially in areas where porcupines are common. Here are some tips to keep your furry friend safe:

  • Leash control: Keep your dog on a leash during walks, especially in wooded areas or near brush piles where porcupines might reside.
  • Train for focus: Teach your dog a strong “leave it” command to deter them from approaching unfamiliar animals.
  • Stay vigilant: Keep an eye out for porcupines on walks. They’re typically slow-moving and easily identifiable by their quills.
  • Know what to do: If your dog does get quilled, don’t try to remove them yourself. Seek veterinary attention immediately.

By following these tips, you can help prevent your dog from having an unpleasant encounter with a porcupine. We wish Winnie a speedy recovery and hope she finds her forever home soon.
