In Salmon Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, Joey, the playful golden doodle certainly was a lucky pup. What started out as a play date in a sheep pasture ended up as a heroic rescue and survival story for the dog after he fell off a 70-foot cliff – straight down mind you!

According to the Facebook page for the Victoria Volunteer Fire Department, Chief, Justin Parsons explained how the dog accidentally backed into a section of a broken fence and fell down the bank. Rescuers spotted the dog on a small portion of the cliff below.

Joey probably fell into the water which undoubtedly saved his life. The dog was then able to swim to the ledge. When the firemen arrived, they dispatched a zodiac boat to try and reach the dog, but were faced with the challenges of wind, tidal changes and dangerous rock formations.

According to CBC News, Joey was a bit aggressive as the strangers approached him, and the crew had to use a catch pole to pull him to safety. Once in the boat however, Joey realized he was being helped and cuddled into his rescuers. Other than a small cut on the dog’s forehead, he remained unscathed. Now that’s one lucky pup!

Today crews responded to a dog that had fell over a cliff in the Salmon Cove Eagles Trail area. VVFD and Salmon Cove Perry’s Cove FD searched the area and found the owner in the Freshwater animal pasture. Upon scene size up, Harbour Grace FD was dispatched for cold water rescue.
Joey the Golden Doodle was rescued and now is safe and sound with its owner.
Now that’s one lucky dog!
