Stray Rescue of St. Louis picked up this suffering dog on Wednesday; she had been trying to give birth in a vacant lot. According to neighbors however, she had been trying all day with no luck. Rescuers knew immediately she was having complications and needed emergency help. She was rushed to their emergency veterinarian clinic, and after seeing one large, stuck puppy on an x-ray, she was prepped for an emergency c-section. The rescue staff named her Panchita.
During surgery, Panchita’s heart stopped beating three times, but her surgeon was able to get her back; the clinic team were beyond amazing saving this dog’s life. The puppy stuck in the birth canal did not survive, and for days Panchita was not able to urinate; Panchita had been in labor for days.
It is possible she was pregnant with just one oversized puppy, or she could have had others, but if they were deceased when they were born, then she would have cleaned the mess herself, so we will never know.

Once Panchita awakened after surgery, she was assured that one day she would be adopted and have a beautiful back yard with trees and soft grass where she could relax. And then as the sun would be preparing to set, her loving family would be taking her for a relaxing walk, and on her return to her home, she would lie on her back on the couch – someone special gently scratching the top of her head and maybe her belly too.
Fortunately Panchita did make it through the night. Her heart having had stopped several times during surgery had placed her at a high risk of dying.
Good Morning from Panchita!! Yes, she made it through the night! Looks like we have a warrior girl on our hands! She just came back to Stray Rescue after going to an overnight ER. They took such wonderful care of her, and now she’s home. She even wagged her tail and wiggled her whole body which is unbelievable to us. After being in emergency surgery yesterday and having her heart stop 3 times…to eating breakfast and feeling so good already today! We got her set up on the comfiest of blankies and will monitor her all day.
