Less than two-weeks ago, Delta Humane Society of Louisiana, had been notified about a German shepherd left lying by the side of the road for two days in the cold and the rain. The dog was unable to move and cried for help. It is suspected the dog had been struck by a car.

Two Good Samaritans heard the dog softly whimpering and using their flashlights late at night, found him. The dog was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, and Casey, with the DHS stepped up to help. It had been noted that the dog’s owner knew about his dog’s situation, but chose not to respond.

…gorgeous despite never having any care or attention. Last night, as strangers moved him in the rain and the dark, we know he was scared and in agony but he was docile and forgiving although he whimpered in pain. Not many dogs are that gentle and loving. He deserves to have a better life than he has known and this surgery can give it to him.

Davis had numerous fractures which required surgery. Through donations, the rescue organization had been able to raise more than $8,000, and on February 23, Davis underwent surgery at the LSU Veterinarian School.

The procedure will last 8 hours!! Yesterday’s test revealed his L7 vertebrae is in three pieces but a greater problem is a small bone fragment that is embedded they believe in the nerves and that is causing his paralysis.

After the surgery, it was baby steps for the sweet dog who had been paralyzed for 10 days. Davis was finally able to move, and with the assistance of a sling, was able to get up on all four legs thus beginning the long journey to a new life.

And on Friday, Davis left the hospital. His new foster mom, Karen Neal picked him up and the LSU team gave Davis a happy send off.

Davis has a long road ahead of him. After he feels better, he will need to undergo heartworm treatment and neutering. During this time, the team will be evaluating his behavior well enough to find him a wonderful home.

For now, Davis is not available for adoption. If you would like to send a gift to both Karen and Davis, please send them to DHS 165 Covington Rd. Rayville, La .71269.

  1. OMG POS owner left him to die in the ditch! Wow, how cruel can one human be? Happy Davis is able to walk again, lucky boy. Wishing they would charge his owner for neglect!
