In the southeastern part of Alaska, the search continues for a woman who vanished under the water and ice over the weekend in the partially frozen Eagle River.

According to the Hill and Alaska State Troopers, the woman disappeared on Saturday close to the north fork of the river, which is located near Anchorage leading to one of the state parks. Investigators stated they believed the woman and a man had been walking their dogs along the trail, when one of the dogs took off and ran into the water. The woman and the man both rushed in after the dog, but the woman disappeared under the water while searching for her dog.

The man returned to shore and was not injured. The Anchorage Daily News reported they believe the “woman was swept underneath the ice downriver” and stated a wide portion of the river had frozen over with ice in the area where she vanished.

Officers from the Anchorage Police Department and Alaska State Troopers arrived at the location on Saturday afternoon to find the woman, but as yet have found “no signs.”

According to a Facebook post, the dive and recovery teams have been deployed, but the lack of daylight in Alaska has greatly hindered the search. In December, it is only light for about 5 1/2 hours with the sun rising at 10:00 a.m. and setting at 3:45 p.m.

We are deploying in the morning (24 Dec.) to perform the recovery mission in Eagle River. Today before it became dark we went out and assessed the site, do to the risk to the team (working in the dark on thin ice over moving water) we decided to start the recovery mission when we have adequate daylight.
