In Detroit, Michigan, a very sweet puppy was severely burned with acid by her previous owner. When the puppy, named Amira, arrived at The Animal Resource Funding Foundation (ARFF) on July 30, it had been generous donations and the help of Dr. Lucretia Greear at the Woodhaven Animal Hospital that helped to save the puppy’s life.
The 12-week-old puppy had been surrendered to the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society. Immediate life saving treatment started, and she needed to be stabilized first; it had been dozens of soothing, medicated baths that helped to remove the dead tissue and to start her long road to recovery.
According to the rescue organization, the previous owner had become infuriated at the puppy when she soiled her crate. How Amira must have screamed in agony, and all the while, the children in the household watched?
We think we have seen and heard it all. BUT then we find another case that we just cannot phantom the cruelty of a human to a poor helpless animal.. How can a human do this to a sweet innocent puppy? Yes there is an active investigation.

The puppy’s skin had been completely burned away; her muscle, bones, tendons and ligaments had all been exposed. At the time, it had been a choice as to humanely euthanize the puppy or to use the latest technology with new stem cell patches attached to her skin and fur accompanied by skin graft surgeries; all to put the tiny, sweet puppy back together again.
By the middle of August, Amira’s recovery continued. The puppy had her entire life ahead of her, and it had been everyone’s decision to help her gain back her life that had just barely started. After her first major surgery, she lost a part of her ear, the front of her nose, her tail, and three toes; 50 percent of her skin grafting had already been completed. Her tail was amputated as it was rotting off.
At her second surgery, Dr. Greear grafted more skin, and despite the intensity of her treatment, Amira loved everyone and enjoyed her time out in the sun. She loves to sniff, explore and just be loved by everyone she meets.
Just this week, surgeons had to amputate her leg. Tragically the acid had eaten through the muscle and bone; the infection left doctors no choice.
And if you’re curious as to how Dr. Greear has been able to help this sweet little one, her expertise as a veterinarian surgeon, along with teaming up with Hilltop Bio, a veterinary biotech company, have supplied the hospital with amniotic skin derived from horse placenta. Mixing the product with hyperbaric chamber treatments to aid recovery time has aided in healing time.
Within months, Dr. Greear is hopeful the puppy’s recovery experience will just be a distant memory. It is hoped she will only need one or two more surgeries. Our dogs are so resilient, so loving and so loyal, do we really deserve all they give us?
The foundation has paid about $15,000 in costs for Amira’s surgeries and care, and her recovery will continue.
The original owner of Amira has not been arrested nor is she facing any charges at this time, as more investigative work has to be done. Authorities asked that the exact location where the abuse occurred be kept private while the investigation continues.

It’s raising children to believe it’s okay to abuse animals so why isn’t Child Protective Services involved too? What is going on in Michigan where animal abusers get by with this?
