On Sunday, authorities responded to emergency calls from the public in reference to an unresponsive dog left in a vehicle on Durgin Lane in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

According to WgmeNews, when police arrived, they found the terrier had died. He had been left in the vehicle for hours with all of the windows shut. Temperatures on Sunday outside of the car had been in the mid 70s, however the internal temperature of the care was recorded at 125 degrees. A small amount of food and a small amount of water had been left on the back seat of the vehicle

The dog’s owner, Susan Weilbrenner, 52, has been charged with animal cruelty. She has since been released on personal recognizance and is due in court on July 17.

Sadly, as the weather gets warmer, owners are still leaving their dogs in hot cars. It only takes 20 minutes for the inside of an automobile to heat up to more than 100 degrees – even on a 70 degree day. Leave your dogs home, or make sure someone stays in the vehicle while you run into a store.
