Man drowns in Lake Allatoona trying to save his dog

In Cherokee County, Georgia, a 54-year-old man drowned near the falls in the Little River near Lake Allatoona on Thursday. Witnesses stated a man had been swimming out to rescue his struggling dog when he went under water.

According to Wsb-tvNews, the victim, Jackie Merrell, was located in 15 feet of water by the Cherokee County dive team and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Additional information concerning the situation has not been released, however officials urge people to make sure and check local weather conditions and never swim alone. Authorities have not released the condition of the dog.
