K-9 Officer Kane was killed on Wednesday in the line of duty while assisting in the capture of a wanted man in Geneva, Illinois.

According to Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson, the six-year-old dog and the carjacking suspect are dead after a police chase ended in a crash and shootout. The mangled vehicle involved had been stolen out of Aurora on Wednesday. When police spotted the gray Honda Accord in South Elgin, the suspect took off and ultimately crashed.

After the crash, sheriff deputies sent Hudson to try and help apprehend the offender, who got out of the vehicle with a gun. Gunfire was then exchanged; the suspect was killed and so was Hudson. The deputies involved were not injured.

Video submitted by the department showed dozens of deputies standing besides their dogs and lines up facing one another along a street as a police SUV transported the body of Hudson on his final journey to the sheriff’s office. Several police dogs could be heard whimpering as the SUV slowly passed by.
