In Loxahatchee, Florida, two dogs have died and another one suffered serious injuries after lightning struck a home during Thursday afternoon thunderstorms.

According to AbcNews, the home located at the 12000 block of 75th Lane North was hit by lightning at 4:00 p.m. West Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Firefighters responded to find the home and shed showing smoke. The residents were not home.

Firefighters rescued seven dogs, however two did not survive and were killed in the fire. A third dog remains in critical condition according to Palm Beach County Animal Control.

A neighbor from across the street had been looking out the window during the storm and saw the huge lightning strike. She immediately called the fire department.

The flash was bright red. I was very surprised, actually, because how can lightning be red? It was such an experience I haven’t felt before, and I didn’t even know that could happen.

The damage to the home has not been assessed, and it is not known if the owners are able to return.
