On Thursday, a stray dog was found at Landsdowne; an area on the east side of Youngstown, Ohio. Today was to become this stray’s dog luckiest day; he has been rescued by the Friends of Fido, volunteers who are committed to assisting the rescue of dogs from Mahoning County Dog Pound.

Lenny was found this afternoon. Most of his coat is gone revealing the hardened and crusted over elephant type skin. His ears had been haphazardly cut off with one ear larger than the other. Half of his tail is missing, and he has open sores sores all over his body. It appears as if he had been wearing a collar recently, but that had been removed from his neck; maybe the dog had wiggled out of his collar or maybe someone took it off so as not to be able to identify their dog ever again?

At first, Lenny was thought to have been a senior, but his eyes are still clear. His teeth are hard to see because the skin around his mouth is very stiff.

This poor guy was shaking, laying on the bed waiting to go to urgent care. Urine was leaking out of him. I wanted to pet him to comfort him but every time I did he shook from discomfort. He has to be agonizingly itchy. He reeks from his skin condition. It is likely mange.

Lenny’s veterinarian examination confirmed he suffers from Sarcoptic Mange which is highly contagious to both humans and dogs. His wounds are likely self-inflicted from constantly having to scratch. His hair loss is the result of the mange.

In addition to the never ending itchiness Lenny suffers from, his liver levels are off, and he is anemic. He also has a urinary infection. What kind of person could watch this dog suffer every day and not help him?

This poor guy has suffered for God knows how long. Someone had to have seen him, A family member, neighbor or friend? Why did no one speak up for him? How could a human being see a dog in this condition and look the other way? It’s ignorant and evil – plain and simple.

Lenny is now in quarantine for the next four weeks because of the severity of his condition. He is being treated with antibiotics, administered medicated baths and all medications to help him heal and finally feel comfortable.
