Now how did this happen? Last Friday, in San Francisco on busy Interstate 80, traffic coming into the city had to be stopped to rescue a fluffy, frightened rabbit curled up along the highway.
The San Francisco Animal Care and Control posted a photo of the bunny of their Facebook page showing the tiny little guy all huddled up against the concrete traffic divider. It had been a motorist who had spotted the rabbit and called animal control who then sent officers to the location on 1-80 west near the Bay Bridge.
Rabbit freeway rescue! A Good Samaritan noticed a rabbit on the side of the freeway and called us. Three of our Animal Control Officers – Officer Ortega, Officer Tumath and Officer Quirk – managed to stop traffic on I-80 Westbound from the Bay Bridge to rescue the rabbit. The Officers stopped traffic, corralled the bunny, and brought her back to the shelter at 1419 Bryant Street. She is healthy, uninjured and doing well in our care.

The rabbit will be at the shelter for several days to see if an owner claims her. If no one comes forward, she could go up for adoption early next week. Shelter staff have nicknamed her Elektra after another female daredevil of note.
