Do you have a sharp eye for detail? Try to find the hidden kitten in the picture in 10 seconds.
It was at the Jackson County Animal Shelter in Michigan this sunny Monday morning when a stray, very frightened kitten had been brought to the shelter, and it was mewing in its box. A mother dog had finished nursing her own very young puppies when she heard the kitten and refused to leave the door leading to the kitten.
The shelter staff knew the mother dog had just eaten and had already been outside to do her bathroom necessities, but she kept scratching at the door.
We opened it up to ask what she wanted and she Ran straight to the kitten in the box. After some discussion with the dog and our team, we put the kitten in her pool and only then did she lay back down in her pool with all the babies.

And it was at that very moment, the mother dog started cleaning the kitten. It was 100% her idea and she wasn’t taking no for an answer.
If you’re wondering who this very special dog might be, meet Kela, a Great Dane mix who arrived at the shelter recently – very, very pregnant. Because she was so big, a regular dog bed wasn’t going to fit the bill, so a very generous animal advocate donated a plastic pool for her comfort – stuffed with blankets and towels it was all so cozy.
And a few days later, Kela gave birth to 10 puppies! They are all doing well and the puppies are beyond adorable. And now we have a kitten too for Kela to love.
