In Southington, Connecticut, a woman faces criminal charges after she allegedly tried to feed a dog a chocolate covered candy with a mothball inside of it to stop the dog from barking. Sandra Sullivan, 57, of Whitlock Ave., turned herself into authorities after an arrest warrant had been issued charging her with criminal attempt to commit animal cruelty.

According to Eyewitness News 3, police responded to a call on December 23 by a homeowner reporting suspicious activity. When authorities arrived, the person told police he had seen a woman dressed in black walking along his fence. As he went out to figure out why his dog was barking, the man said he recognized the woman as a house-sitter in the neighborhood.

The woman was allegedly spotted placing a small item on a nearby tree stump just moments before the man found a similar item on his back steps. When he examined what appeared to be a chocolate candy, he noticed it smelled like a mothball.

When Sullivan was interviewed by police, she initially denied she had placed the poisonous candies outside of the neighbor’s house, but later admitted she had hidden the mothballs inside of the candy because she had been frustrated with the dog’s constant barking. She said she had not intended to hurt the dog and just wanted it to stop barking.

Mothballs can cause illness in dogs including gastrointestinal and neurological signs. Chocolate is also harmful to dogs.

Sullivan is free without bond and is expected to appear in court next week.

  1. What a stupid woman!!! She should have spoken to the neighbor who owns the dog.
Perhaps a non-poisonous solution could have been arranged…..
