A short clip of a man walking a dog for the first time has garnered more than 1.1 million views on TikTok and is still being shared – making us all laugh and some of us to hilarious, happy tears.

The video, shared by @nadineandmissy shows a man taking an adorable pooch for a walk. The puppy – a Cavachon which is a mix of a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a Bichon Frise showed the challenge. The energetic pooch was definitely in charge, and the man trying his best to keep up and maybe keep some control was a total flop albeit hilarious.

When you have never walked a dog before.

So how do you train a dog to walk on a leash? We guarantee puppies are not born with that knowledge. Just a few basics as suggested by the American Kennel Club…

Key Points

Getting your puppy to walk on a leash is easier than you may think. Don’t yank or drag him. Get your puppy used to wearing a collar/harness or leash inside the home before venturing outdoors. Make it positive for the puppy, and whenever he wears his collar and leash, it represents fun and food.

Perhaps teach your puppy a cue like “dinner is coming” and there are other methods to try also. This is just one suggestion, and the moment he looks at you when you say that, make sure he gets a treat. Make your puppy come to you still wearing his collar and leash, back up a few steps and then reward him with a treat when he comes to you.

The best place to practice new skills is indoors helping to keep your puppy more focused since their attention span is still very brief, but anytime he displays a desirable result of paying attention while wearing his leash and collar, make sure to reward him.

And when you are ready to go outside, keep the walks short. There are going to be a lot more distractions outdoors so try to make sure puppy is keeping his eyes on you – rewards help!
