At a farm in Steep Falls, Maine a mother dog Great Pyrenees named Charlotte had quite the surprise on Tuesday when she gave birth to eight puppies and one of them was born green.

According to Riverside Lavender Farm, the green spotted tiny bundle weighed in a one pound and two ounces. She was the biggest of the litter; the other seven weighed less than ten ounces. This rare phenomenon is thought to happen when light-colored puppies come in contact with biliverdin, a green pigment found in bile. It’s the same pigment you can see when bruises turn green.

The dog’s coat seems to have turned green while in the womb, but the color does fade over time. It is a rare occurrence and only happens in less than 10,000 births according to the

It essentially dyes their fur in the womb, and the color fades over time. It is incredibly rare and happens less than once every 10K births, the farm owners reported.

The puppies have not been named, and the farm owners are planning on placing all the puppies in loving homes.
