Ohio – Just one week after a smiling dog named Ziggy was adopted, his new family returned him to the shelter. Friends of the Wood County Dog Shelter said that Ziggy lost his home because he got out of his crate and “destroyed” the garage. The agency explains what may have happened, writing:

Could it be separation anxiety? Possibly. But it could also be because I have never been properly crate trained and less than a week’s time is not enough time to crate train any dog and maybe I felt trapped, scared, I panicked and I freaked. Or maybe it was just because everything there was new to me. New smells. New sounds. New people. An entirely new place that I’d never been before. How was I supposed to know what was going on when I was put in a crate and left?

At the shelter, Ziggy has never tried to break free. He has not shown himself to be a destructive dog. Now the burning question is this…will anyone think that Ziggy is worth putting time and effort into? The group said:

I’ll be here waiting – I’m really hoping there is someone out there who thinks I’m worth putting the time and effort into helping me become the best boy I can be! I’m willing to work with you – I just need someone who wants to work with me. Please?
Love, Ziggy

  1. IF ONLY PEOPLE WOULD REALIZE THE STRESS AND ABSOLUTE TERROR THESE ANIMALS FEEL WHEN THEY DONT KNOW WHAT FATE IS AWAITING THEM!

WHY CAN’T ADOPTERS UNDERSTAND THIS?! NO BRAINS OR HEARTS,
    I GUESS!

  2. POOR ZIGGY and others like him. IT DOESN’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT! The 3-3-3 RULE is a general guideline for the adjustment period of a dog after adoption. Every dog is unique and will adjust differently. 3 DAYS TO DECOMPRESS – Feeling overwhelmed – May feel scared/unsure of what is going on – Not comfortable enough to be “themselves” – May not want to eat or drink – Shuts down and/or hides under furniture – Tests the boundaries /// 3 WEEKS TO LEARN YOUR ROUTINE – Starts settling in – Feels more comfortable – Realizes this could be their forever home – Figures out their environment – Gets into a routine – Lets their guard down, may begin to show true personality – Behavior issues may start to appear /// 3 MONTHS TO START TO FEEL AT HOME – Finally feels completely comfortable in their home – Begins to build trust and a true bond – Gains a complete sense of security with their new family – Sets into a routine. /// GIVE THEM A CHANCE!
