In Los Angeles, the Board of Supervisors has ordered an investigation into the accidental euthanasia of a three-month-old puppy earlier this month at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center.

According to rescuers, Bowie had been surrendered by his owner because of landlord issues. The puppy had no record of any aggression or behavioral problems. He was just frightened.

I feel sick to my stomach to even write this. We had a plan in place to pull this little guy from Baldwin Park Shelter. His name was Bowie. He was 3 months old. Bowie was terrified, shaking in a cold concrete kennel, awaiting an uncertain future. He was failed by humans early on, but still had his whole life ahead of him. Unfortunately, we were too late. He was taken to the euthanasia room this weekend and killed. Along with 22 other dogs.

It’s a never ending cycle and unless things change from the top up, the cycle won’t stop. Rescuers are tired, volunteers are tired. Bowie your life mattered.

Maria Rosales, manager of the Animal Care Center, stated that all of the circumstances surrounding the death of Bowie are being investigated Shelter officials shared their deep regrets. A full accounting of what led to the puppy’s death and a plan to prevent similar accidents has to be put in place. Tragically, this isn’t the first case where a pet has been euthanized by mistake.

During the meeting, supervisors all agreed that in order to euthanize less animals displaying behavioral issues, they also could be enrolled in the Paws for Life program that partners dogs and inmates who work together helping each other. And specifically, more research and solutions need to be considered in order to make more opportunities for adoptions, however addressing the problem of owners surrendering their pets still remains a huge problem causing overcrowding in the local shelters.

Officials have 90 days to report back to the Board of Supervisors with a five-year plan to decrease the number and percentage of animals currently being euthanized.

Rest in peace Bowie. You will be missed, and your life did matter.

  1. Absolutely heartbreaking (plus all the precious treasures we never learn about)…….. All of your lives mattered and you all deserved to have full lives instead of being failed by humans……..

Bowie, please look for MacKitty in Heaven and join his wonderful snuggle buddies group. RIP amongst loving friends.

  2. The Baldwin shelter is just like San Bernardino shelter nothing more than a killing field where dogs and cats are killed within days of their hold time expires. They’ve euthanized full term pregnant dogs where puppies die long after the mother is killed. These so called shelters are not shelters they are death houses and only the lucky ones make it out alive.
