Oklahoma man arrested after allegedly admitting to drowning a litter of puppies in creek

A 32-year-old man from Grove, Oklahoma faces one felony count of cruelty to animals. Denver K. Cooper was arrested after law enforcement said he admitted to drowning a litter of puppies in a creek.

According to Law and Crime, four puppies were found dead in a box by a couple who had been walking near the Cave Springs Branch Creek in September 2020. The box contained three deceased puppies, and a fourth deceased puppy later discovered on a nearby stretch of the creek bank. The couple called 911, and deputies with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

More than a year elapsed before Cooper was arrested and two days later he posted a $10,000 bond.

A necrospy performed on the puppies showed their bellies had been full of milk and alive before they were thrown into the creek to drown. Records indicate, Cooper admitted that he owned the puppies, however he had claimed that “they were stillborn.” He also allegedly said he discarded the animals’ remains in the creek.

In a subsequent interview Cooper allegedly admitted he drowned the puppies and told authorities he thought “something would just eat them.”

Cooper’s attorney plans to file a motion to have the case transferred to the jurisdiction of the Cherokee nation and that Cooper is a citizen of same alleging the wrongdoing occurred on land inside of the Cherokee Nation Reservation.
