The Envigo breeding and research facility bred and raised the beagles for scientific research until allegations against the laboratory claimed dogs and puppies had to endure the most egregious experiments without sedation; many dogs and puppies had died in their cages. During a PETA investigation, more than 350 puppies had died at the facility for unknown reasons.

Some puppies had been inadvertently crushed to death by their mothers inside the cramped cages, while others suffered from hydrocephalus, were eviscerated, or just couldn’t survive the harsh conditions.

The new “First Dog” was adopted from Homeward Trails and has been named Morty. Homeward Trails is one of many approved rescue organizations who have welcomed 100 dogs and puppies. The staff and volunteers have been working hard to socialize them and help them to find homes where they will be loved.

Just last week, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan adopted a senior beagle named Momma Mia. Read more about that heartwarming story here.
