A handsome dog is living his best life as the beloved mascot for Houston’s St. Pius X High School Rugby Team. But it wasn’t long ago that he was a lonely stray dog who was living on his own. As reported by Fox 26 News, last month the rugby team was practicing at a field when Buster approached them, looking for affection.

Team member Grant Stringfellow tells the news agency, “You could tell he was a stray. He was looking around for food. He’s dirty, we saw him and he was friendly with us instantly. He was being incredibly friendly with us.”

The team watched in horror as Buster wandered into a yard where two dogs were chained up – Buster was looking for friends, but the dogs in the yard reacted to the wandering stray; attacking him and causing serious injuries. Stringfellow said, “He had no idea what to do. He looked like he was just waiting to die.”

Some of the team members got Buster into a warm vehicle and decided that he needed veterinary attention. Riley Battenfield described Buster’s apparent relief, saying, “In the truck ride with my brother and his friend Hayden, he was just thankful to be somewhere warm. It was freezing and wet outside, so you could tell he was just happy to be around people, and know he would be taken care of.”

The Animal Justice League stepped in to assist and began searching for a foster home for the injured dog. Grant Stringfellow’s family decided that after all the boys had done, they would do their part and foster him. Grant’s mom, Tricia, said, “In order to take him to get help, we had to have a foster, so there was no way we were not going to foster after what the boys did to save the dog.”

The animal welfare agency has commended the team who stepped up to save Buster:

Thanks again to St. Pius X High School’s Rugby Team for stepping up for Buster. Collectively you came together to help a stray dog. You didn’t have to. You could’ve turned away and left him but you didn’t & we are so impressed with the kindness you’ve shown Buster. Y’all are the real MVPs!

Adding:

This story just tugs at our heart strings and gives us all the feels. We are so proud and thankful for this team of young men. The level of compassion they’ve shown this former street dog is so beautiful. We could learn a lot from them.

Buster’s days of wandering the streets, cold and alone, are long gone. Today he is warm, well-fed, and loved. Find the Animal Justice League on Facebook for more photos and opportunities to donate towards Buster’s veterinary care.
