A 500-pound pet pig named Hamilton is being credited as a hero after Gilbert Anaya’s home in Union Township, New Jersey became engulfed in flames, and the pig brought him extra time by shutting the door to the garage on April 11.

According to News12, Gilbert Anaya and Hamilton, or Hammy, have been together for six years. Hamilton and the other pets are part of his therapy. Anaya had been a combat medic in the Navy including a tour in Afghanistan.

“He probably saw the fire and thought panic and fear and just ran out, but he was trained to open and close doors so when he came out, he must have just instinctively spun around and closed it.

Anaya to News 12

According to the fire department, Hamilton closing the door gave Anaya 15 to 20 minutes to escape; keeping the fire and smoke from spreading. The fire had been caused by a surge protector short circuiting lighting the pig’s bedding on fire. Hamilton woke up and left the garage; the clever bovine had been trained to open and close doors.

When Gilbert woke up and ran away from the approaching inferno, he worried that Hamilton had not been able to escape, but after running outside with his other pets, spotted Gilbert grazing in the yard.

Since the fire, Gilbert has been living in a makeshift tent in the yard. The home suffered extensive damage. There is a fundraiser online to help Gilbert and his pets with expenses.
