At Christina Lake in British Columbia, a nine-year-old German shepherd and Ridgeback blend is lucky to be alive after her owner fought off a cougar attack against the dog. Ian Orser had been working in a residential neighborhood last week when he and his daughter, Megan heard their dog howling.

According to Global News, Megan and her dad first thought their dog, Red had been in a dog fight, but when they rushed over, they spotted the cougar, who had the dog’s head almost inside of its mouth. Ian wasted no time, and ran up to the wild cat and kicked it in the head. That apparently did the trick – the stunned cougar backed off, but it didn’t go far.

Ian then swung a stick at the huge cat who still refused to run away. Megan and her dad grabbed their other dogs and ran to their truck to rush Red to an emergency veterinarian. Red survived the attack, needed 20 stitches and is recovering. Had the family’s other two dogs – springer spaniels who are much smaller than Red been attacked, likely would not have been so lucky if they had encountered the wild predator.

A report was made to the B.C. Conservation Office Service who confirmed they had been receiving numerous complaints about the cougar in their area. Because of the risk to the public, the cougar was euthanized. Officers said he was an older, emaciated male in “pretty rough shape.”

People need to stop feeding wild animals. Part of the blame for having to kill wild life is human ignorance.
