Edinburg, TX – On Tuesday night, an elderly German shepherd was scheduled to be euthanized at a Texas animal shelter. The senior dog, named Larry, had been surrendered by his family because of advanced hip dysplasia and an ear infection that was impacting his balance.

Suffice to say, things looked grim for the elderly dog who was cast aside by his owner. But Larry’s story did not end there. He did not die alone by the side of a stranger.

Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue had posted Larry’s sad image on their Facebook page and the response was overwhelming, with over 2000 shares and more than 1000 comments on the post that read:

Dies at 6:30 TODAY
Per the shelter:
This gently boy is Larry, a senior GSD that was just surrendered due to hip dysplasia. He is able to stand and walk for a short distance before falling over. The previous owner also stated that Larry has had an ear infection, resulting in a vertigo like state. Head tilting and poor coordination are evident. He must leave by end of day today.

Because of that response, and most importantly, because of compassionate human beings, Larry was saved. The rescue group said:

There is nothing that touches my heart more than a senior GSD in need, and it’s apparent so many of you feel the same. Larry Smith was picked up and brought home by one of our awesome RGV Fosters and will soon be picked up by two more volunteers to begin his 3 hour journey to the ER! He has a team of supporters behind him and is already feeling the love and comfort they provide ❤ Thank you so much for getting his story out!
