In the mountain range of Croatia’s freezing temperatures, Grga Brkic owes his life to his eight-month-old Alaskan Malamute named North. Brkic had been out for a walk with a group of his friends when he fell down a nearly 500 feet slope and was seriously injured.
According to the Facebook page HGSS – Hrvatska Gorska Služba Spašavanja, was not able to reach the other two mountaineers with him; it took 13 hours for help to reach the injured man.
EARLY MORNING: A very demanding rescue operation is underway. A report was received about a mountaineer who slipped on the Vagan peak (Highest peak of Velebit) down a 150 meter slope. According to the information we have available, it is about serious bodily injuries. 25 HGSS rescuers from Stanice #Zadar and #Gospić were sent to the field.Facebook
When Brkic was found, his eight-month-old dog had been on top of him keeping him warm. Rescue workers stated the man would not have survived had the dog not helped keep him warm.
The Croatian Mountain Rescue Services posted the following heartwarming message about the special connection humans have to their dogs.
Friendship and love between man and dog know no boundaries. A series of unfortunate circumstances they climbed together down the slope yesterday afternoon. Together in happy and difficult moments, that’s life. North passed without injuries, but his friend, a young mountaineer, was not so lucky. He curled up with him and warmed him with his body. His loyalty did not stop even from the arrival of the savior, he was one of us guarding his man for 13 hours. From this example we can all learn about caring for each other.Facebook post
North was not harmed during the ordeal. We surely don’t deserve dogs do we?
