Investigators with the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office have launched an animal cruelty investigation after a family’s dog was found fatally shot in Ronald, Washington. According to the authorities, the dog, a four-year-old Malamute named Kita, was found on the evening of March 9 with a gunshot wound to her belly.

In a news release, the authorities said:

Kita had been missing from home since the afternoon of Tuesday, 3/8. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident with the assistance of Pasado’s Safe Haven, an animal welfare nonprofit based in Sultan, Washington.

A veterinarian with Pasado’s performed a necropsy on Kita and discovered that she had been shot with a pellet gun. The news release addresses claims that there have been other animal killings in the area:

The Sheriff’s Office is in communication with Kita’s family, who are understandably distraught. We’re aware of rumors of a string of killings of dogs and cats; but we are unaware of any related incidents in Kittitas County. Similar rumors in the past have proved false.

Requesting that any cruelty reports be made immediately:

If anyone has information concerning killing, harm or neglect of any animal, we ask them as always to contact us immediately. Please contact us through Kittcom at 509-925-8534.

Pasado’s is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of whoever is responsible:
