After Sanibel Island was cut off from Florida’s mainland after the Category 4 hurricane destroyed the causeway, the United States Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command went to work saving lives. A dog and his human companions are safe Thursday after one of the Coast Guard aircrafts rescued the stranded Sanibel residents.

It had been a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin team who found the family after searching the island. More than 200 residents on the island decided to ride out the storm and did not evacuate.

And then came a man, his wife and their cats. Check out the video:

According to Gov. Ron DeSantis, more than 700 people have been rescued – mostly by air.

Saving our two and four-legged friends alike!

#FromtheField: Yesterday, our CGNR 6590 crew hoisted two people and their dog to safety from an area affected by #HurricaneIan. The 6590 airmen airlifted at least 10 people and 4 pets from some of the footage we’ve received. #vicecitysar#D7#USCG#SoOthersMayLive
