Three dogs in South Carolina died last week after overheating inside of an animal shelter van. As reported by WDPE News, the dogs were among 10 dogs who were inside of a Darlington County Humane Society van which apparently experienced a mechanical failure of the vehicle’s air-conditioning system.

Jackie Kirven, with the shelter, told the news agency that the dogs were being transferred to see a veterinarian for a check up. The air-conditioning was left on inside of the vehicle, but it malfunctioned and all of the dogs inside suffered heat-related symptoms. Kirven said, “It was agonizing to see them in distress and to try so hard to save them and to lose three of them.”

The other distressed dogs were treated by a veterinarian and have recovered. The entire experience left shelter staff in “shock,” and Kirven has described it as a “living nightmare. She said,

We’re heartbroken and I can’t tell you how painful this experience was and how distressing. we are still shaken and traumatized, frankly.

The van is being checked out to see what caused the mechanical failure.
