In Swampscott, Massachusetts a young coyote was euthanized on Wednesday after it had been caught in an illegal raccoon trap on its head and its jaw clamped shut making it unable to drink or eat. A $1,000 dollar reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the heinous deed.
According to the Wicked Local Swampscott News, the five-month-old pup had been in the trap for about a week; the suffering animal was found in the metal trap (#160 Duke Trap) in the Tedesco Country Club and Swampscott Middle School wooded area.
The town’s animal control officer, Daniel Proulx, stated the male coyote had been spotted with the trap on its head by a golfer; environmental agencies helped to capture the coyote and spent days trying to catch it in a humane trap with no results.
The pup was finally captured on Monday and rushed to a wildlife center where experts agreed the damage to his broken jaw could not be repaired.
We had to euthanize the coyote,” said Proulx, adding they did so at Atlantic Veterinary Hospital in Marblehead. “I held the pup in my arms.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Swampscott Police Department and Animal Control at 781.595.1111. Help this innocent animal find justice. If you see something, say something.
