Two pugs “cooked to death” after they were left inside of a zipped up tent for hours on a hot summer day when temperatures outside soared to over 93 degrees. TJ Gregory, 28, and Sarah Henniker, 33, left their pets in the hot tent in Essex, England in July for more than eight hours.
According to The Sun, when the couple returned, they wrapped the lifeless bodies of Millie and Tito in a sleeping bag with the intention of burying the dogs later. Authorities had already been alerted and moved the dogs’ bodies to a secure area as evidence.
Prosecutors at Colchester Magistrates’ Court said the dogs had “cooked to death” and showed signs of heat stroke. The couple’s defense attorney stated Henniker owned the dogs since they were puppies and never wanted to hurt them, however accepted they should not have left the dogs for such a long period of time.
Henniker and Gregory were both sentenced to 18-months of community service with 160 hours of unpaid work each. Gregory was also given 20 rehabilitation days. Both have been banned from having any animals for the next five years.
