In St. Louis, it had been nearly a year since Walter, the golden retriever went missing in the woods behind an industrial park. And on Friday the 13th, a day so many people associate with bad luck, Walter was found and has  now been reunited with his owner.

According to Where’s Walter, a Facebook page set up by Kate Olson of New Hampshire when her dog went missing while she had been visiting relatives last Thanksgiving, the dog had slipped out of his collar and took off. Kate stayed in the area for weeks searching for her beloved dog; fliers and notices went up everywhere in the area hoping someone would spot him.

Eventually Kate flew home, but never gave up hope.

Lost Paws Trapping, a non-profit group based in Belleville, Illinois tells the amazing story:

“Sometimes people think we’re crazy, sometimes people think we’re mad, but it’s times like this that make it all seem worthwhile!  It’s been a super long, tiresome, frustrating road, but the infamous Walter from New Hampshire will finally be going home!

13 days shy of being on the run for an entire year; living in the woods, avoiding everyone he met and finally on of all days Friday the 13th, Walter has been trapped!”

Immediately Olsen got on a plane and headed towards her reunion with Walter.

“Many many many thanks to all those that helped keep their eyes open for him, gave us leads, to Kim Kage for offering to do anything she could on that side of the river, luckily once we had a confirmation and knew a location it went much smoother than expected. Also a huge huge thank you to John Flangenbach the owner of Perma Jack on Hoffmeister, and Maryanne Heuer for seeing the makeshift duck house on the side of John’s business and wondering if it could be for a lost dog? Everything fell in a line, John helped us out tremendously giving us access to whatever we needed, he saw Walter on his security cameras for a couple months but could not get anyone to come try to trap the dog. Thank goodness he didn’t, Walter was not microchipped and God only knows where Walter might be right now.”

When the two were reunited, Walter and Kate made their connection.

“He has been such a little love. He is the same sweet boy he was before and maybe even sweeter because he has missed getting loved on!”
