In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a dog owner was sentenced to 60 days in jail for starving his dog to death. Hiram Renard Goins Jr. will also serve three years of supervised probation at which time he is banned from owning or caring for any pets.
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Goins, 30, pleaded guilty after prosecutors stated he had been the target of two complaints about his three dogs having been tethered outdoors in the extreme cold. A pit bull mix named Debo died from malnutrition, starvation and exposure sometime between January 3 and January 4 when outside temperatures dipped to 12 degrees.
Dan Anthony, Goins’ attorney, said Goins had been remorseful for what happened to his dog. The other two dogs were healthy.
