In West Harrison, Indiana, a physician from Fairfield, Ohio has been accused of hitting his dog in the head with a hammer and then shooting it. Joseph J. Stubbers III has been charged with felony animal cruelty.
According to the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office, a neighbor notified authorities on Saturday to report Stubbers had been cleaning his garage with bleach after hitting his dog in the head with a hammer. Another neighbor stated the dog had also been shot.
The dog, Cooper, a five-year-old English Mastiff, was found surrounded in blood with one mutilated eye. Deputies recovered two rounds from a gun; one bullet had hair on it, and a hose and bleach sitting on top of a trash can.
Stubbers stated Cooper had attacked him and had “latched” onto his arm. Police did not find any injuries on Stubbers.
Cooper is being treated by a veterinarian and is under the care of the Dearborn County Animal Control. The defendant was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond.
