A Pierce County, Washington, man was arrested this week after 49 dogs were discovered at his residence in Tacoma. According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, the authorities obtained a search warrant and visited the residence on December 18.

In a release, the sheriff’s office recounts the disturbing details:

An animal control officer contacted the owner of the residence and asked to see some of the dogs. The owner showed the officer six dogs. All of them were malnourished, had wounds and scars and were afraid of the owner. Three of the dogs appeared to have given birth to puppies within the last six months

After searching further, dozens of dogs were found inside of crates in a garage. The sheriff’s office states:

officers found dozens of dogs locked in crates inside a garage with no ventilation or lighting. The dogs were lying in their own urine and feces.

Officers also found paraphernalia associated with dog fighting and breeding, including: medications, syringes, first-aid supplies and training tools.

A total of 49 dogs and puppies were removed from the residence. Most of the dogs were rated as being in “poor or very poor body condition.” Nearly a dozen of the dogs required veterinary care – others were taken to the Tacoma Humane Society.

The 40-year-old owner was booked into the Pierce County Jail on charges of animal cruelty in the first degree and animal fighting. The warrant was served in the 9000 block of Portland Ave.

Note: The owner of the dogs has not been publicly identified by the authorities pending the results of the ongoing investigation. There are unconfirmed reports that the man has already been released from jail.
