A high school student is facing a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals for allegedly beating a stray dog to death with a broom. According to the Ledger-Enquirer, 17-year-old Renardo Welch, a student at Hardaway High School, attacked the dog on September 25 at the Club Hill Apartments in Columbus, Georgia.
The suspect’s explanation
Welch described what happened to the Columbus Police – according to the news agency, Welch told the authorities that he tried to get the dog to leave the porch, before inviting the stray into an apartment. After letting the dog in, he tried to get the dog out and resorted to using a broom to repeatedly hit the dog in the head. The dog’s body was discovered in the woods near the apartment complex.
Welch’s alleged act of cruelty has resulted in one count of aggravated cruelty to animals – to which he has pleaded not guilty.
There are no indications that the stray dog ever posed any threat to the teen.
