A senior dog was impaled after falling into a manhole in Colorado Springs, Colorado. According to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, the 10-year-old dog, Blizzard, was pierced by a pipe when he fell into the manhole located on the side of his owner’s yard – for some reason, the cover to the manhole had been removed.
Amy Ochs, Blizzard’s owner, explained to PEOPLE, “We have a manhole on the side of the driveway and a trailer was parked over it. We looked and saw the manhole cover was off.” Blizzard was badly injured and in pain so a veterinarian was needed to assist.
The animal shelter wrote:
“Animal Law Enforcement Officers Tucker and Gingrich immediately responded with our staff veterinarian Dr. Rainey and Selina, our veterinary technician, from our American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)-accredited veterinary clinic.”
Dr. Rainey crawled into the manhole to comfort the injured dog and worked to free him – after he was finally out, he was stabilized with IV fluids and warming therapy while the Colorado Springs Fire Department supplied him with oxygen. Law enforcement transported Blizzard to the family’s veterinarian for further treatment.
Blizzard required two nights of veterinary care before being released to his family.
Great rescue effort to all involved!!

You would think your own yard would be safe. I’m glad the dog will be okay, but it’s a real shame he and his family had to go through this.
Glad the dog is alive. Could have been much worse.
“we looked and saw the manhole cover was off”???
WFT?! Those babies are HEAVY, and could NOT have been simply removed – especially WITH A TRAILER PARKED OVER IT!
SOMEONE had to know this was open, and the injuries to this precious soul SHOULD have been precluded by “due-diligence” on the part of whomever moved that lid, and failed to replace it!
SO grateful to learn sweet Blizzard recovered: This could have ended so much worse….
how much does it take to cover a hole in the street, good grief. bad enough the poor dog got hurt, imagine a child,
Agree! !!!
Thank goodness Blizzard was saved. Someone took the manhole off and threw him in?
Applause for the rescuers and Dr. Rainey for coming to Blizzard’s aid – this could have been a fatal incident – someone either took the manhole cover off or someone neglected to replace it. Those things are extremely heavy and even city workers use a tool to remove it. Something does not smell right here. But all in all I am very glad Blizzard has recovered and that is all I care about.
