In Holyoke, Massachusetts, a local resident is alleged to have tossed a pair of puppies off a fourth-floor balcony and then threatened to kill police officers from the Holyoke Police Department. According to MassLive, the situation erupted last Thursday when authorities were called to a home after the caller reported finding a puppy in her pool.

When officers responded to the home on James Street, numerous witnesses reported the puppies had  been thrown off the porch – one landing in the pool. That puppy was rescued  by the caller, but had been so frightened he had hidden in the bushes. The other pup had fallen into a nearby fire pit and appeared to be seriously injured.

According to the police report, Jose Romero, 22, threw the puppies from the porch after one bit him. Romero was a boyfriend of one of the tenants, and as police entered the apartment, Romero barricaded himself inside threatening to kill the officers. Romero faces two counts of animal cruelty and four counts of threatening to commit murder.

In court on Tuesday, Romero pleaded not guilty. His bail was set at $500 cash, $5,000 surety because of the nature of his offenses. There has not been an update on the condition of the puppies.
