With the assistance of Norfolk Animal Care and the Norfolk Fire Rescue, a 15-year-old dog named Diesel has been reunited with his family. It had been on Friday, March 27, when the gate to Diesel’s yard had accidentally been left open, and Diesel decided to go exploring.
When the dog’s family found out Diesel had slipped out, they contacted the Norfolk Animal Care Center and filed a report. The following day, a nearby resident heard a dog barking in apparent distress and called for help. The Animal Protection Unit was dispatched to the location and searched the entire area, but where was the dog?

Fortunately, the story took a positive turn. During his afternoon outing, Diesel had allowed his nose to lead him to a small storm water drain where he was not able to get out.
Norfolk Fire Rescue Engine 13 arrived and were able to lift him out. In the following minutes, Diesel was on his way to the Norfolk Animal Care Center.

Diesel surely must have borrowed some extra special lives from cats, because the two staff member who had assisted Diesel’s owners the previous day with filing their lost dog report, immediately recognized the dog when he arrived at the shelter.
Then there was a phone call and another truck ride, and Diesel was on his way back home to his loving family.
How’s that for a happy ending?

Thanks to the teamwork between a citizen, dispatch, Animal Protection Unit, Norfolk Fire-Rescue, and the Norfolk Animal Care Center a sweet (and maybe a little too curious) senior dog is back home and safe.
