In Henrico County, Virginia, a family’s beloved seven-year-old golden retriever had been diagnosed with terminal blood cancer last August. By January, despite medical intervention, Emmie’s condition worsened; her life was drawing near to its end.

Perry’s Steakhouse stepped forward and honored Emmie with a special final meal, complete with a steak bone, lots of kisses and hugs from staff and customers alike.

Dessert came, and it was a huge chocolate cake and flambeed in front of the group.
Kelly Blumenthal, the dog’s owner, had been told Emmie’s cancer had been very aggressive, and she only had between two to six months to live. Chemotherapy treatment had been unsuccessful, and by January the cancer had spread to her lungs.

Yesterday, on January 22, 2026, our 7 year old golden retriever with terminal cancer woke up and couldn’t walk. After bringing her to the vet, we got the call that she wouldn’t live to see the next morning and at best, we had hours. There was so much pressure to determine how we would spend these last hours.
According to local media, the restaurant’s general manager, Jesus Martinez is also a dog owner and understood the close emotional connection between our dogs and ourselves.

Emmie’s last night was no less than magical. She drank sparkling water and had her bed next to the fireplace. She watched the sunset after her honor walk through the restaurant. Even the restaurant reservation had been under Emmie’s name.
As hard as it might have been, it was a happy time as Emmie felt so much love. The memories provided by the restaurant, and all of the people involved in the last minute preparations will be treasured by everyone and especially her family.

Just 40 minutes after the family left the restaurant, Emmie passed peacefully at home
Rest in peace Emmie. You are loved.
